for hours at the end I kissed your temple stroked your hair and sniffed it it smelled so clean we'd washed it Saturday night when the fever broke as if there was always the perfect thing to do to be alive for years I'd breathe your hair when I came to bed late it was such pure you why I nuzzle your brush every morning because you're in there just like the dog the night we unpacked the hospital bag and he skipped and whimpered when Dad put on the red sweater Cover my bald spot will you you'd say and tilt your head like a parrot so I could fix you up always always till this one night when I was reduced to I love you little friend here I am my sweetest pea over and over spending all our endearments like stray coins at a border but wouldn't cry then no choked it because they all said hearing was the last to go the ear is like a wolf's till the very end straining to hear a whole forest and I wanted you loping off whatever you could still dream to the sound of me at 3 P.M. you were stable still our favorite word at 4 you took the turn WAIT WAIT I AM THE SENTRY HERE nothing passes as long as I'm where I am we go on death is a lonely hole two can leap it or else or else there is nothing this man is mine he's an ancient Greek like me I do all the negotiating while he does battle we are war and peace in a single bed we wear the same size shirt it can't it can't be yet not this just let me brush his hair it's only Tuesday there's chicken in the fridge from Sunday night he ate he slept oh why don't all these kisses rouse you I won't won't say it all I will say is goodnight patting a few last strands in place you're covered now my darling one last graze in the meadow of you and please let your final dream be a man not quite your size losing the whole world but still here combing combing singing your secret names till the night's gone

I am in the mood for love
But Love is a naughty nymph.
Hiding behind a prick in the garden
Twitching its nose
Giggling silently with hands over its mouth.
Palms wet from moist lips
Licked by a sweet wriggly tongue.
When I peeked above the blooming black magic
Only to catch a glimpse of shaken leaves
Love plays a delicious game of hide and seek
With those who have neither time nor luck.
Slithering through the green maze
Skin pierced by false hopes
Of catching Love behind that thorn.
To finally hear its laughter
Tickling my cupped palms
Melodic shivers down to my toes.
For I have caught Love
Sneaking through my rose garden
In the middle of the day
When the sun wasn't shinning.

Up on the hill overlooking the garden
Where Love hides behind a prickly bush.
In the mood for a game of hide and seek
With an illusive nymph prettied in chance.
Through a maze of random green distractions
Searching for a fairy dust trail left behind
By Love as it runs from rose to rose.
Black magic disguised as an ordinary flora.
As the moon raises from behind the gate
Love intentionally stood still in pretense
To shine hope for the luckless tonight.
Just one night of fulfillment in life
Pretend that I am loved.
Only when in the mood for love.

She was told that love would be found
Behind a thorn in the rose garden at the foothill
Hidden in a maze of green walls cleverly disguised
It was never meant to be an easy prey.
Before all the cuts and scratches bled red
Getting confused by clues in different directions.
Mind's trick played by Love so skillfully
Spinning trails to throw off any hope.
When she thought she was in the mood for love
Love was not in the mood to be loved.

As the smell in the air changed
Flowers withered and trees stripped off their green
Love ran out of places to hide.
The game was getting old
Bait stale
I was growing weary of tricks disguised as hope.
Tired of running circles in the green maze
Not in the mood to be lied to once and again.
Lost sight of the entrance and never saw an exit
A naughty nymph's amusement has to stop
Standing alone lost in desperation with no happy ending.
When passion gave way to snow
All illusions are shattered to reveal
Just being in the mood for love is not enough.
For Love will never be a captive
Until Love is forgotten in the cold.

Ruins of an old rose garden
Hidden by overgrown vines.
Thorns got sharper as time passed
Nature's barb wire to this prison.
Many have heard the tale
A naughty nymph's game of hide and seek
But no one knew there was a girl
Who had long forgotten how it felt
To be chasing after delusions so sweet.
She grew up weary of something
That she couldn't remember.
Though wounds healed and old scars faded
The gorge inside her damaged heart remains.
Some days she wondered
If it was a snicker she heard echoing in there
Fleeting moments of past hopefulness.
Never did she find her way back to the maze
Lost in reality she drifted further away.
As Love found new places to hide
In the mood to start the games again.
It waited patiently for her return
Love didn't need to hide any more.
A girl who had lost
Her passion and way.
